WHITESTONE GALLERY
KENGO KUMA AND ASSOCIATIES
Originally conceived as a Bauhaus-style factory for the production of electronic equipment, Beijing’s 798 Art Zone underwent a revitalization process starting in the 2000s. It was within this context that the White Stone Gallery was envisioned, occupying a space beneath a vaulted, sloped roof.
The project embraced the site’s architectural characteristics to create a gallery that offers visitors a unique experience, transforming the narrow, elongated entrance into a transition between everyday life and the artistic realm.
The varied dimensions of the space were carefully integrated, leveraging its unique features to craft a strong identity. From the striking façade—featuring a three-dimensional aluminum panel canopy—to the interior of the gallery, the design lends an imposing presence, establishing the space as a true landmark within the 798 Art Zone.
The gallery’s design fosters a connection between indoor and outdoor environments, using materials and construction techniques that respect the structural scale and reflect different moments in history. At the same time, it creates a calm atmosphere where art takes center stage, softly and minimally illuminated.
