EAGLE+WEST BUILDING

OMA

The Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn underwent revitalization as part of the new 2005 zoning, aiming to increase local residential density. Thus emerges the Eagle+West Building, which features two towers of 30 and 40 floors. The main difficulty faced in its development was how to insert this large quantity of housing on a limited site without compromising residents' quality of life.
To overcome this challenge, the distance between the towers was expanded, creating a more pleasant sense of space. The solution was to reduce the size of the towers and redistribute the masses to ensure an 18-meter space between them, more appropriate for the neighborhood's scale. The towers were designed with an overlapping of stepped volumes, with the taller tower widening as it rises to maximize views, while the smaller tower widens toward the ground, connecting with a new waterfront park.
In terms of construction, the two towers were designed to create a unified language through a series of terraces and cantilevers that visually connect them as a single block. Assuming solidity and integration with the neighborhood, the subdivisions occur every seven or eight floors, their fragmentation reinforced by the use of precast concrete panels sculpted with dynamic angles, while large windows provide wide views and illuminate the internal units. Additionally, the incorporation of terraces and a connecting bridge between the towers creates continuity between internal and external spaces, reflecting the project's ambition to integrate urbanism and landscape.
The Eagle+West building, designed by OMA, is an example of how engineering can provide innovative solutions for better quality of life.
